If you have lived in Brunswick for more than a year, you already know the rhythm of the Town Mall in August. Blankets go down on the green by 5:45. The gazebo speakers crackle at six. Somebody's dog gets loose during the second song. What you might not have absorbed yet is how much of the surrounding block has quietly turned over since last summer, and how that turnover changes the way a Wednesday evening or a Saturday morning actually plays out.
This is not a list of everything happening in town. It is a look at the three or four shifts that matter most for the way you use downtown between now and the first week of September.
The 42 Maine Street reshuffle
The single biggest change on the block sits at 42 Maine Street. Baked on Maine opened in January at 42 Maine St. in Brunswick, in the space formerly home to The Great Impasta, which is now on Pleasant Street. That one sentence hides two independent decisions worth understanding.
First, the Great Impasta did not close. It moved down the block. If you have been sending out-of-town guests to the old address on autopilot, redirect them to 11 Pleasant Street, where the restaurant reopened in March 2025 for its 40th year.
Second, the team that took the 42 Maine spot is not a brand-new operator. Ned Horton, a Nashville real estate investor with roots in Brunswick, is the owner of the three sister cafes, and became interested in opening a space on Maine Street in Brunswick as soon as The Great Impasta went up for sale. The other two sisters are already familiar to most residents: Wildflours Gluten-Free Bakery in Brunswick and Mae's Cafe & Bakery in Bath.
What that means for your morning:
- Breakfast on Maine Street was, until January, a gap. The manager put it plainly when the cafe opened: "What's not already here is a breakfast place on Maine Street in Brunswick."
- The kitchen leans smoked and eclectic rather than diner-standard. Think a "big smoked breakfast" with brisket, pulled pork, smoked sausage, two eggs, home fries and toast, or beef on weck, a favorite in Buffalo, New York, with thinly sliced roast beef piled high on a homemade kaiser roll topped with caraway seeds and coarse salt.
- Coffee is not an afterthought. The cafe features made-to-order creations, as well as freshly ground and brewed drip coffee from Portland-based Coffee by Design.
- Hours are narrow. Baked on Maine is currently open from Friday through Monday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 42 Maine St. If you are used to weekday breakfasts, plan around Tuesday through Thursday closures.
The practical version: the block now supports a Friday-through-Monday breakfast anchor it did not have twelve months ago, and the restaurant most locals used as their Italian standby is a two-minute walk south of where it used to be.
The tavern that fills the evening slot
The other new arrival is Ram & Bull, a modern tavern bringing elevated comfort food, craft cocktails, and a lively downtown atmosphere to Maine Street, located in one of Brunswick's most recognizable restaurant spaces, quickly becoming a favorite gathering place for locals, visitors, Bowdoin College families, and anyone exploring Maine's Midcoast region. The address is 123 Maine Street, roughly across from the Mall.
Menu specifics that separate it from the pub category it might otherwise get lumped into:
Popular starters include hand-breaded cheese curds served with blueberry sriracha barbecue sauce, poutine topped with rich demi-glace, Bangs Island mussels with garlic butter and herbs, and Jonah crab cakes with Cajun remoulade.
Hours run Monday 11:30 AM to 8 PM, closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 11:30 to 8, Friday and Saturday 11:30 to 9, Sunday 11:30 to 8. The Tuesday closure matters if you have been used to the previous tenant's schedule. It also means that on concert Wednesdays, Ram & Bull is the closest full kitchen for a pre-gazebo dinner without leaving the block.
Put Baked on Maine and Ram & Bull together and the practical geography of Maine Street has shifted. The daytime anchor is now on the north end. The evening anchor is mid-block. The Italian standby is one street over. That is a different downtown than August 2024.
The August calendar, week by week

Three of those deserve a closer look because they define the shape of the month.
The Wednesday concert series is closing out its 2026 run. Music on the Mall: Lexi James and Wildheart, Wednesday, August 12, 2026, 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, at the Brunswick Town Mall on Maine Street. If you have been meaning to catch one this summer, August 12 is your last regular Wednesday on the green until next June.
The Arts Festival is the big Saturday. This juried fine arts show includes more than 140 artists and artisans who will display and sell their work along Maine Street and on the lush Town Mall (green) in downtown Brunswick. Saturday, August 15, 2026, 9 AM to 5 PM, rain or shine. It runs concurrent with the middle Saturday of the Topsham Fair, so Route 196 traffic will be heavier than a normal weekend afternoon. If you are driving in from the Vassalboro or Sidney side, budget an extra fifteen minutes and park north of Pleasant Street.
The Fair itself is longer than most residents remember. Visit the Topsham Fair with the entire family August 11 to 16, 2026. The state-approved dates actually stretch two days earlier: The Topsham Fair proposed extending its licensed fair dates, opening two days earlier, with 2026 dates of August 9 to 16. Worth checking the fair's own schedule if you are planning around specific harness racing or livestock events.
Two habits worth adjusting
For residents who have been on the same downtown routine for years, two small updates change how the block feels this summer.
First, the 2nd Friday Art Walk is not a summer-only rhythm anymore. It carries into fall. June 12, July 10, August 7 and September 11, 2026, 4 to 7 PM, downtown Brunswick. If August 7 slips past you, September 11 is the same event with sweater weather.
Second, the Bowdoin International Music Festival is longer than the concert-hall crowd usually treats it. June 29 to August 7, 2026, at multiple Brunswick locations, with ticketed concerts, free community events, student performances, masterclasses, lectures, and livestreamed programs. The free community events in particular are underused by residents who assume the festival is priced for visitors. This year's window closes the same day as the August Art Walk, which means Friday August 7 is the single densest day left on the summer calendar.
The fall bookend, already on the calendar
One item to put in the phone now, because it sneaks up every year. The town's Halloween parade steps off at 4:30 PM on Halloween, and the parade will start at the Mall on the Park Row side and move down Maine Street, making a right turn onto Bank Street, a right turn onto Federal Street, then a right onto School Street, and the parade will end back at the Mall. Immediately following the parade, at approximately 5:05 PM, children are invited to participate in the Tent or Treat event where local organizations and volunteers will be handing out candy from decorated tents on the Mall. If you live within a block of that loop, plan your driveway accordingly. If you do not, park south of Pleasant Street and walk in.
The short version
The block between the Mall and Pleasant Street is doing more work in August 2026 than it did in August 2024. Baked on Maine gave the north end a real breakfast anchor for the first time. Ram & Bull filled the mid-block evening slot with a full kitchen and a bar that stays open past the gazebo's last note. Great Impasta is still here, one street over. The Downtown Association's Wednesday and Saturday programming still frames the week, but the food geography around it has moved.
If you have been sending yourself on the same Saturday loop since 2023, the loop is different now. Walk it once with fresh eyes before Labor Day.
